Since July 19, 2007 BACKYARD CHICKENS BECAME LEGAL IN KENT, WA

On Tues., June 19, 2007, Kent City Council members voted UNANIMOUSLY to change the city's animal code, which previously restricted City of Kent residents from keeping backyard pets (besides dogs or cats) on any residential lot smaller than two acres.

THE NEW LAW ALLOWING BACK YARD CHICKENS

NOW CHICKENS ARE LEGAL! Effective JULY 19, 2007, city of Kent residents, living on at least 5,000 square feet of property, may legally keep up to three pets (fowl, rabbits, dogs/cats and/or a chinchilla). AND . . . for each additional 1,000 square feet of property, that household may add one additional pet!

That means a family living on a 10,000 square feet lot may keep up to 8 such backyard pets and a lot with 12,000 square feet may keep up to 10!

NOTE: A property line setback of 10 feet applies for a chicken house or aviary. Contact
the city's Planning Department for more code details.
